What is Soccer?
Known as football everywhere outside North America, soccer is the world’s most-watched sport with over 4 billion fans. Here’s everything you need to know.
Standard soccer pitch — 100–110m long, 64–75m wide
11 Players Per Side
Each team fields 11 players: 1 goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Up to 5 substitutions per game.
90 Minutes of Play
Two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute break. Stoppage time is added by the referee for delays and injuries.
The Objective
Score by getting the ball fully across the opponent’s goal line. Most goals at full time wins.
No Hands Allowed
Only goalkeepers may use their hands, inside their penalty area. All other players use feet, head, and chest.
Offside Rule
A player is offside if they’re nearer the goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played.
Yellow & Red Cards
Yellow = caution. Two yellows = red card. A red card means the player is sent off for the rest of the match.

The Official Rules
Soccer is governed by 17 Laws of the Game by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Here are the most important ones.
- Law 1 — The FieldRectangular grass pitch. Goals are 8 yards wide and 8 feet high. All lines are part of the area they define.
- Law 3 — Players11 per team. A match can’t continue if a team has fewer than 7 players. Substitutes need referee approval.
- Law 5 — The RefereeThe referee’s decision is final. They are the timekeeper. They can correct a decision before play restarts.
- Law 7 — DurationTwo 45-minute halves. The referee adds stoppage time. There is no clock stoppage during open play.
- Law 9 — Ball In/Out of PlayThe ball is out only when it fully crosses the touchline or goal line. Bouncing off the post = still in play.
- Law 11 — OffsideOnly an offense when the player is actively involved in play. Being behind the ball is never offside.
- Law 12 — FoulsDirect free kicks for handball, pushing, tripping, kicking, charging. Indirect kicks for dangerous play.
- Law 14 — Penalty KickAwarded for fouls inside the penalty area. Taken from 12 yards, one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
- Law 15 — Throw-InBoth feet on the ground, both hands on the ball, thrown from behind the head. Taken at the touchline.
- Law 16 — Goal KickWhen an attacker last touches the ball before it crosses the goal line without scoring, the keeper restarts.

Uruguay hosts and wins the inaugural World Cup. 13 nations compete.
1950
The USA shocks England 1-0. Brazil suffers the Maracanazo, losing at home to Uruguay in front of 200,000 fans.
1966
England wins its only World Cup on home soil at Wembley, 4-2 vs West Germany.
1970
Considered the greatest tournament. Brazil wins a third time and permanently keeps the Jules Rimet Trophy.
1994
First World Cup in the USA. Brazil wins its 4th. 3.6 million fans attended — still the highest total attendance ever.
2010
First World Cup in Africa. Spain wins their first title, defeating Netherlands 1-0 in extra time.
2022
Argentina wins in Qatar — Messi finally lifts the trophy after a dramatic 3-3 draw won on penalties vs France.
2026
USA, Mexico & Canada co-host the expanded 48-team tournament. Final at MetLife Stadium, NJ on July 19.

Soccer Legends
Some players transcend the sport. These names defined eras, broke records, and inspired billions of fans worldwide.
Pelé (1940–2022)
Won 3 World Cups (1958, 62, 70). Scored 1,000+ career goals. The only player to win three World Cups. A global ambassador for soccer.
Diego Maradona (1960–2020)
Won the 1986 World Cup almost single-handedly. Famous for the “Hand of God” AND the “Goal of the Century” — both in the same game vs England.
Franz Beckenbauer
Won the World Cup as player (1974) and manager (1990). Invented the modern sweeper role. Known as “Der Kaiser.”
Ronaldo (R9)
Top scorer at the 1998 & 2002 World Cups. His 2002 final performance (2 goals vs Germany) is one of soccer’s greatest individual displays.
Lionel Messi
8× Ballon d’Or — more than anyone in history. Won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. Now plays for Inter Miami in MLS.
Cristiano Ronaldo
5× Ballon d’Or. All-time top scorer in international football with 130+ goals for Portugal. Known for athleticism and relentless drive.
Zinedine Zidane
Won the 1998 World Cup for France. Won 3 Champions Leagues as Real Madrid manager. Considered the greatest European player of his era.
Johan Cruyff (1947–2016)
Invented “Total Football.” The “Cruyff Turn” is one of soccer’s most iconic dribbling moves, still used in every game today.
