What is Soccer?

Known as football everywhere outside North America, soccer is the world’s most-watched sport with over 4 billion fans.

The Objective
Get the ball fully across the opponent’s goal line. Most goals at full time wins.

No Hands
Only the goalkeeper may use their hands, inside their own penalty area.

Offside Rule
A player is offside if nearer the goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender.

Cards
Yellow = caution. Two yellows = red. Red card means sent off for the rest of the match.

  • Law 1 — The FieldRectangular pitch. Goals: 8 yards wide, 8 feet high.
  • Law 3 — Players11 per team. Minimum 7 to continue.
  • Law 5 — The RefereeDecision is final. They are the timekeeper.
  • Law 7 — DurationTwo 45-min halves. No clock stops during open play.
  • Law 9 — Ball In/OutOut only when it fully crosses the line.
  • Law 11 — OffsideOnly an offense when actively involved in play.
